Installation

We are here to help you every step of the way.

Tools for the Job

The tools you will need vary depending on your individual requirements.

Wall Studs

If you are mounting to wall studs the minimum required supplies are: phillips screwdriver, measuring tape, stud finder, pencil, and a level.

Drywall

When installing in drywall you will also need heavy duty drywall anchors, a drill and the drill bit listed on the anchors you  purchased.

Mounting Directly to Wood

Mounting to a board between 2 wall studs or directly to a strong wooden surface requires a drill, drill bit, level, pencil, measuring tape, phillips screwdriver or bit.

Custom Applications

We are working on additional methods for installing your towel bar on unique surfaces such as glass or concrete. Let us know how we can help.

Things to keep in mind when choosing your install location: Always ensure your Tinker Towel Bar will be mounted securely. Do not mount your Tinker Towel Bar directly above a seating area or anywhere a person could easily bump their head. The Tinker Towel bar is not designed or should ever be used as a grab bar intentionally or otherwise. It is designed to hold bath towels or clothing items only.

Double check the width of your towels are proper for the width of your Tinker Towel Bar. We currently make our bars to fit up to 33 inch wide bath towels. Keep in mind that we recommend 2 inches minimum between each bar at the end curve of the bar loop to allow sufficient air circulation to dry your towels quickly.

  1. Measure Twice - Hold your tinker towel bar(s) against the wall or other surface you intend to install them on. Have your helper measure the height from the floor you wish to have the bottom of the mounting bar.  A good rule of thumb is to measure your towel length and subtract six inches. The bottom of the towel bar should be a minimum of 46 inches from the ground. Place a piece of tape or a sticky note horizontally at that spot. Measure left or right of the center of the mounting bar from a reference point and mark that spot at the top center of the tape or sticky note you placed previously. If you wish to mount more than 1 Tinker Towel bar on that wall measure the appropriate distance(s) between the bars so they are spaced as desired. Minimum 2 inches between bars.
  2. EASY AND SIMPLE - Once you have your measurements confirmed hold the bars against the wall to double check their position is where you desire. Make a pencil mark on the wall ½ inch higher than where you want the bottom of the mount bar to be. This is where the bottom hole of the mounting clip will be drilled. Use a level across all of the marks (if mounting more than one TTB) to confirm they are level and in line with each other. At this point it is best to use a stud finder to find the wooden stud positions on your wall. They are an inexpensive handy tool you will use forever and available at popular hardware stores.
  3. Mounting to Drywall - If you will be mounting directly to drywall we recommend you use one of the many new High Load drywall TOGGLE anchors available at popular hardware stores. Tinker Towel Bars mount very well with a strong permanent hold using these high load anchors. Drill only the single bottom hole at this time. Before drilling the anchor holes take a hammer and nail and carefully position the nail in center of your mark and drive the nail straight thru the drywall. This will give you a pilot or guide hole for your drill bit. Drywall is relatively soft and a drill bit can easily drift off your mark otherwise. If you hit the wooden stud behind the drywall you won’t need an anchor for that hole just use one of the wood screws we have included. Install your drywall anchor in the single bottom wall hole then install the mounting plate with screw and tighten slightly so mounting clip will swivel side to side without too much force. If mounting a 2nd or 3rd bar beside each other mount those clips on the bottom hole only the same way. Now place a level on top of all the mounting clips together and be sure the level contacts the entire top of each clip. All clips will be level and now you can mark inside the top 2 holes of each clip. Use the nail again to make a small pilot hole in dead center of the mark like the first one. Install the wall anchors then screw the remaining 2 screws through top clip holes and into anchors.
  4. Mounting Directly to Wood - If you will be mounting to wood it should be to a wall stud or to a horizontally mounted board that is screwed into at least 2 wall studs. The board should be at least ½ inch thick and 3 inches wide. Jazz it up to match your bathroom (or Bedroom) decor with a nice natural wood grain, paint or tile. It is not recommended to mount the bars to thin wood paneling without at least a ½ inch thickness. Check position is as desired. Mark your single bottom hole position(s). Use a nail to make a small pilot hole in dead center of the mark and predrill with a drill bit slightly thinner than you mounting screws. Use the provided wood screws to mount the mounting clip in the bottom hole only for now. If you have a span of bare wall in your bathroom long enough to mount multiple bars beside each other; consider screwing a long board to wall studs across that span and mounting the Tinker Towel Bars to that board. This will give you the strongest mount possible. Install the screw in the single bottom mounting clip hole into the drilled hole and tighten slightly so mounting clip will swivel side to side without too much force. Drill the holes and screw the remaining 2 screws through top clip holes into holes drilled and tighten firmly.
  5. Advanced/Custom Install - If you will be mounting to a glass shower door or partition there are many adhesives available for mounting metal to glass. We have seen strong, clean and reliable mounting of metal to glass from the CRL company and recommend their products.  If you are unsure, please ask a professional! We recommend you DO NOT try to drill holes in the glass panels as in our research this is very difficult and can result in shattering the glass panel. You certainly can order you glass panels with holes predrilled if building or remodeling a new home.
  6. Attach the Bar - Once you have mounted the mounting clip(s) attach the TTB to it by lowering it onto the top ledge of the clip then simply tighten the included Allen screws (on the bottom edge of the TTB base) firmly with the included Allen wrench.
  7. Maintenance - If over time your TTB becomes loose on its mounting clip tighten the Allen screw on the bottom of the bar. If the TTB is still loose or moving a little then the screws holding the mounting clip to the wall have become loose. Simply loosen the bottom Allen screws, remove the TTB and tighten the 3 screws in the mounting clip – do not over tighten. For drywall mount this is why we recommend the TOGGLE type, high load drywall anchors. They hold onto a large area behind the drywall and allow you to tighten the screws into them without pulling through the drywall.
